KEY POINTS:
The last month of winter was quite warm. NIWA has released its national climate summary for August.
Principal scientist Jim Salinger says while there was more wind than usual during August, it was also about one degree warmer than average in the North Island.
Salinger says Wellington, Nelson and inland south Canterbury enjoyed sunlight hours that were up by a quarter to a third.
Salinger says the only extreme weather event was the gale force northwesterlies that battered central and southern New Zealand regions from the 10th to the 12th.
