Most years Auckland has a light frost or two but the frost on Wednesday morning was heavy for some suburbs. The frosts were widespread across the North Island but not so widespread in the South Island ahead of the next cold change for Wednesday night and Thursday morning. We also take a look at the long weekend forecast for Queens Birthday.
It will be warm but wet over the Queen's Birthday break, as a string of chilly mornings and fine days look set to give way to wet weather in the top part of the North Island.

MetService meteorologist Liz Walsh said the fine weather was likely to hang around untilSaturday, with rain expected in Auckland, Coromandel and the Far North that night. Temperatures would remain relatively steady, with highs in the late teens and lows around 8C expected in Auckland.
"The best weather is further south -- head to Wellington," Ms Walsh said.
Fine, frosty days were forecast for the south, with very chilly mornings.
