KEY POINTS:
The Greymouth war memorial pillars will be handed over to a Greymouth man this morning after he reached an agreement with their owners.
Mawhera Incorporation had the four 86-year-old pillars removed early on Sunday morning and has since stored them in a paddock at Arahura, 35km south of Greymouth.
Mawhera Inc owns the land the war memorial stood on, and removed the pillars ahead of moves by the Historic Places Trust to have them preserved on site. Mawhera plans to build a shopping centre on the former school site.
After days of stalemate, Mawhera chairman Maika Mason met this morning with Roger Devlin from the Grey Main School Reunion Committee and told the Greymouth Star afterwards that Mr Devlin would retrieve the pillars later this morning.
"We are happy with that," Mr Mason said.
"He (Mr Devlin) was the only who offered to negotiation in a calm and sensible way. We have allowed him to remove them, and take them to Greymouth."
