Wairarapa-Bush have been "shopping around" overseas in an attempt to boost their locking resources before their representative rugby programme gets into full swing.
And hopes are high that their efforts will produce a positive result.
Inquiries have already been received from three prospective locks who could fit the bill and the next move is to find clubs willing to utilise their services.
"If we get the right sort of response from clubs they could be here in basically no time at all, "Wairarapa-Bush selector-coach Peter Russell said. "We'd like to see them playing at club level as soon as they can so we can judge what their potential is."
Russell described the dearth of quality locks on the current club scene as a "big problem" leading into his team's NPC third division campaign.
The three main contenders for the middle row in the side which finished runner-up for that title in 2004, Stu Smith, Dan Griffin and Dan Joblin, are now playing their rugby in other provinces and suitable replacements are simply nowhere to be found.
"There are very few players with either the height or the bulk let alone the skill level to fit the requirements of lock at, say, NPC level, "Russell said "It's a very important position, especially in the set pieces, and we need to be competitive there."
The availability of possible locking options in neighbouring unions Wellington and Manawatu has been explored but so far little interest has been expressed from either quarter.
Russell actually intends to name his first official training squad for the 2005 season next Monday and he said a number of new faces were likely to be included in the 24, particularly in the backs.
They could include the Gladstone utility backs John Uys and John Dodd, midfielders Tommy Harmon (Carterton) and Dan Hape (Masterton Red Star) wingers Phil Aporo(Marist) and Nick Olson (East Coast).
Rearguard regulars almost certain to be in the reckoning again are James Bruce., Hamish McKenzie, Patrick Rimene, Nathan Couch, Simanu Simanu and Jorji Tamani.
Up front you can expect squad members from last year like Rob Foreman, Dylan Higginson, Ritchie McDonald, Logan Ili Brendon Walker, Sylvanus Iro, Steve Olds, and Sam Henderson to be in the forefront of contenders.
But consideration will also be given others such as Gladstone flankers Damon Neal and Steve Wilkinson, Carterton loosie Brodie Duffin, Pioneer utility forward Nathan Rolls, Greytown-Tuhirangi prop Jon Tanner, East Coast prop Mike Peacock, Marist flanker cum lock Corey Reid and Carterton utility forward Joe Harwood, all of whom have been consistently prominent at club level.
Wanted: Two damn good locks
