Wanganui teenager attacked in vicious assault

Police are appealing for witnesses after a Wanganui teenager suffered serious head injuries in an attack this morning.

The 19-year-old man was walking through near CBD about 3.20am when he was approached by two people.

He was knocked down and the assault is believed to have continued while he was on the ground, said police.

Residents contacted police after hearing a commotion.

The victim was taken to Wanganui Hospital with serious head injuries.

Two males, aged 18 and 16, found in the area were arrested a short time later and due to appear in court tomorrow on serious assault charges.

A party or social gathering is understood to have taken place nearby at the time of the attack, and police wanted to hear from anyone who was in the area with information about the incident.
