Louisa Wall has won the candidacy for the safe Labour seat of Manurewa where MP George Hawkins is to retire at the next election.
Ms Wall, who had the support of the Service Workers, the Maritime and the Amalgamated Workers unions, beat the other front-runner, Jerome Mika, an official for the Engineering Printing and Manufacturing Union.
Mr Hawkins is understood to have threatened to resign before next year's general election if Labour selected Mr Mika.
