Alamein Kopu, a member of Parliament from 1996 to 1999, died yesterday in Rotorua, aged 68. During her term, she became known as the "waka jumper" after quitting the Alliance - for which she had entered the House as a list MP - to become an independent. Her vote helped Jenny Shipley's National Government to stay in power.
