Wairarapa College beat Rathkeale College on the last ball of their Umpires Cup senior men's inter-club cricket played match at Rathkeale on Saturday.
Batting first in a game reduced to 47 overs apieceWairarapa College made a respectable 195-8,hanks in the main to Dane Buchanan and Jeremy Anderson, both of whom reached 55.
Buchanan hit three fours and one six but was not as consistently punishing as Anderson whose knock included 10 fours.
Opening bowlers Simon Clinton-Baker and Tom Broughton impressed for Rathkeale. Clinton-Baker's 10 overs cost just eight runs and he took two wickets while Broughton took 3-32 from his 10 overs.
Rathkeale looked no chance to get anywhere near their target when 54-5 but with Tim Luas striking eight fours in his 56, Doug Bracewell two fours and one six in his 36 and Craig Aplin two fours in his unbeaten 23 they staged a fine fightback and victory became very much a possibility. However, they fell just one run short, being 194-8 at the close of play

The Bracewell Academy X1's match with Greytown also went right down to the wire with the academy team reaching their target of 155 on the last ball of the game and with two wickets to spare.
Mark Jonas (35), Shane Mellor (27 not out) and Hayden Spierling (34) were the main contributors in Greytown's 154-8 and Spierling with 5-30 and Mellor with 2-25 also shone with the ball. However, their efforts were in vain as the academy team snatched the win, their main scorers being Jaco Oosthuizen (32) and Graeme Williams (22 not out).
Lansdowne beat Red Star by 90 runs after posting 255-8 and dismissing Stars for 165..Lee Ewington (65) and Henry Cameron (43) were in good batting form for Lansdowne and Ewington also shone with the ball in taking four wickets.
