Wairarapa United were left lamenting some shoddy defensive work after their 3-1 loss to Miramar Rangers in a crucial central league football match played at Hullena Park, Masterton on Saturday.
All three of the Miramar goals, the first of which came very early in the first half, were ''soft'' affairs with Wairarapa United being the cause of their own demise on each occasion.
''Our defence just wasn't up to scratch, we made it too easy for them in front of the goal,'' Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley said. Wairarapa United actually had the better of Miramar in most other facets of play and enjoyed an advantage in both territory and possession.
But all they had to show for their efforts was a second half goal by Andrew Abba which with Miramar leading 3-0 at the time came too late. Several of the Wairarapa United players did manage to leave a good impression, none more so than George Barbarouses who was a livewire on both attack and defence. Pita Rabo, Waisake Subatu, Mirek Tvaroh, Seule Soromon and Abba were others to have strong games.
Results-wise, however, the loss was a disaster with Wairarapa United now nine points, or three wins, in arrears of Miramar Rangers on the table and needing a near miracle to have any chance of making up the lost ground.
