Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley is worried his team's Chatham Cup quarter-final match with gun Auckland club Waitakere City on Sunday, July 24, may have to be transferred from Masterton's Pugh Sports Bowl to an all-weather surface in Wellington.
Even allowing for the recent spate of wet weather, Keinzley was surprised to see the Sports Bowl cut up as badly as it did for his team's Central League game with Western Suburbs last Sunday, a situation which often caused players from both teams to lose their footing.
Already Wairarapa United have decided to move their Central League fixture with Tawa this Sunday from the Sports Bowl to Howard Booth Park in Carterton to allow the Masterton District Council the chance to hasten the recovery process and Keinzley is hopeful they will make the most of that opportunity.
"Obviously we want to keep the Chatham Cup game in Masterton because of the huge interest here but right now I couldn't guarantee that will be the case," Keinzley said yesterday, adding that playing on an all-weather surface in Wellington had to be the next best choice.
"We have to think of the players, they are the ones who have got us to where we are."
As to the Tawa match, Wairarapa United will have to do without Adam Cowan and Scott Robson, both of whom are serving one-match suspensions after picking up their fifth yellow cards in the 3-3 draw with Western Suburbs.
Their absence means Campbell Banks will start in the joint striker's role with Seule Soromon and Adam Milne will play at fullback in what will be his last game for Wairarapa United because of forthcoming commitment.
Wairarapa United line-up: Matt Borren, Pablo Moya, Waisake Sabatu, Adam Milne, Nathan Cooksley, James Oxtoby, Dale Higham, Pita Rabo, Carl Shailer, Campbell Banks, Seule Soromon.
