Coach Andy Holmes credited an outstanding all-round performance for the six-wicket win secured by the Wairarapa under-13 cricket team over their Manawatu counterparts last Sunday.
Holmes said it was a "true team effort" with the batting, bowling and fielding all being of a high standard certainly, a notch above that when they were beaten by Hawke's Bay a fortnight earlier.
Against the Bay Mark Cummings (24), Daniel Ingham (32) and Jamie Holmes (48) were the main contributors in their total of 152 made in 45 overs, the last three wickets falling for just 12 runs.
Hawke's Bay , winners of the Central Districts under-13s tourney in January, overhauled the Wairarapa total in the 41 st over with Oliver Burt taking 3-26 from his 10 overs and other wickets going to Holmes and Cummings.
Wairarapa lost the toss against Manawatu and the latter chose to bat first. Wairarapa were on fire in the field early in proceedings and soon had Manawatu in strife.
Gordon Reisima took two excellent catches and excellent bowling figures were returned by Daniel Ingham (3-26 off 10 overs), Oliver Burt (3-23 off 10 overs) and Jamie Holmes (3-29 off 10 overs). Mark Cummings also took a wicket and Manawatu were dismissed for 124.
Wairarapa batted very sensibly in reply with opener Cummings making 44 and featuring in an 85-run partnership with Ingham who made 40.
The target was soon in reach and Holmes and Reisima were left 20 runs to get in 16 overs and they made short work of that challenge, taking their team to victory in the 37th over with six wickets to spare.
