Wairarapa scored a 55-run win over Horowhenua-Kapiti in an under-15 representative cricket match played at Rathkeale College on Sunday.
It was a confidence-boosting victory for the Wairarapa side which had recently attended a tournament involving teams from Canterbury, Nelson and Marlborough and had not managed to win a game.
Therefore the game against Horowhenua-Kapiti provided an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the value of the experience gained there and their win was certainly positive in that regard.
Wairarapa batted first and got through to a healthy 262-6.A feature of the batting effort was the number of worthwhile partnerships with the top scorer being Dean van Deventer who struck 13 fours in a typically aggressive knock of 78.Huib Van Vliet also impressed in making 67.
Horowhenua-Kapiti got off to a flying start by making 73 off their first 10 overs but tight bowling from Andrew Kupa Cauldwell and Tom Adamson saw Wairarapa fight their way back into the game .It was captain Robbie Anderson who achieved the best figures, however, taking 5-30.
Short scoreboard:-
Wairarapa 262-6 (van Deventer 78, van Vliet 67, Beech 25) beat Horowhenua-Kapiti 207 (McFarlane 42, Milner 38; Anderson 5-30, Kupa Cauldwell 2-34).
