The three Wairarapa athletes representing New Zealand at the Pacific School Games in Melbourne last week did their country proud with all of them returning home with medals as part of their baggage.
Corey Casey of Carterton and Chris Girling-McLean of Masterton were both part of the New Zealand team which won gold in the 13-14yrs boys sprint medley relay with Casey doing the 800m leg and Girling-McLean the 200m leg.
Casey qualified for the final of the 13-14yrs boys 800m in the fastest time of 2min 3.28secs and then ran Imin 58.19secs in finishing second to Luke Hamer of New South Wales in the final. There was just 0.14secs between them at the finish.
Another silver medal was picked up by Casey in the boys 13-14yrs 3000m where he finished second equal in a time of 9mins 31.83secs.Winner was Todd Wakeford of New South Wales in 9min 25.40secs.
Stevie Paine, of Masterton, has two silver medals to show for her efforts too, placing second in the girls 10yrs 1500m and being part of a New Zealand team which was third in the girls 10yrs long jump relay. She was also fourth in the 10yrs girls 800m.
