Wairarapa will be the underdogs when they take on defending champions PIC in a regional superleague netball match at the Genesis Recreation Centre in Masterton tonight.
Despite the fact that PIC suffered a shock one point loss at the hands of Convent Old Girls from Hutt Valley in their opening match last weekend they are still considered the team to beat in the superleague series, such as in their reputation for being one of Wellington's strongest club sides over a long number of years.
And they did show glimpses of their best form in the Convent Old Girls match, coming from 17-8 down at the first quarter to lose by just 46-45.
A Wairarapa win tonight is, however, by no means an impossibility. They will be buoyed by their 50-45 victory over Kapi Mana champions, Norths, last Saturday and even though the unavailability of Emma Foote and Jesse Smith has necessitated changes to their starting line-up coach Kelly Sargent is expecting further improvement tonight.
Sargent has named Hope Phillips to start at goal shoot, Geraldine Carroll at goal attack, Carlene Karaitiana at wing attack, Katie Wyeth at centre, Lisa Manihera at wing defence, Perri Tatana at goal defence and Sarah Brooking at goal keeper.
Sargent understands the importance of Wairarapa maintaining their structure and not being fooled into trying to match PIC for either flair or speed of play.
"We have to concentrate on what we are doing, sticking to the game plan is crucial against a team like them," she said.
"If we start rushing things we will be in trouble."
Sargent is hopeful of a big crowd turning up to support Wairarapa in a match which will get under way at 7.30pm.
"The bigger the crowd the better we seem to play?? and we need every bit of help we can get for this one," she said.
