Wairarapa-based teams have the chance to win the two premier Wellington secondary schools hockey titles for the 2008 season.
St Matthew's Collegiate will play Samuel Marsden College in the girls final at the National Hockey Stadium, in Wellington at 5.20pm on Friday night and it will be followed by the boys final between Wairarapa College and Hutt International Boys School at 6.40pm.
The girls final almost became an all-Wairarapa affair with the first semi-final in that competition seeing Wairarapa College and Samuel Marsden locked together at 2-2, leaving a penalty shootout to decide the winner. It was still even after one round of strokes there which then turned the shootout to "sudden death". And with spectators silenced to the point where you could have heard a pin drop Samuel Marsden got the edge required for them to reach the final. The second girls semi-final between St Matthew's Collegiate and Wellington Girls College was also a hard-fought affair with St Matthew's taking the honours by 2-1. Kate McKay scored in the first half and Jade Forman in the second. The boys semi-final featuring Wairarapa College and Hutt Valley High saw 10 goals scored with Wairarapa College winning 6-4. The other semi was also entertaining with Hutt International beating Wellington College 3-2.
