Their exciting come-from-behind outright win over Wanganui last weekend has given the Wairarapa senior men's cricket team an early advantage in their zone of the Hawke Cup qualifying competition.
Of the four first round matches that between Wairarapa and Wanganu produced the only outright result with Wairarapa picking up eight points,just one more than Wanganui which finished with seven by virtue of their first innings lead
Nelson, which plays Wairarapa in Masterton this coming weekend, has seven points too through their first innings win over Horowhenua-Kapiti. Nelson reached a massive 440-8 while Horowhenua-Kapiti were dimissed for 117 and then were dangerously close to outright defeat at 214-9 in their second "dig" when the game ended.
Also picking up first innings wins were Taranaki and Hawke's Bay.Taranaki scored 427-3 against Manawatu which made just 272 while Hawke's Bay made 317-9 in their first innings against Marlborough which was all out for 168 at their first tun at bat and were struggling at 178-6 in their second.
Current points are: Wairarapa 8, Taranaki 7, Nelson 7, Hawke's Bay 7, Wanganui 7, Manawatu 1, Marlborough 1, Horowhenua-Kapiti 1.
