Wairarapa outgunned Marlborough in their Hawke Cup qualifying senior men's cricket match played at Queen Elizabeth Park on Sunday, taking first innings points by 107 runs.
The game was reduced to just one day's play after the heavy rain on Friday leaked under the covers and made the pitch unplayable for Saturday.
Batting first Wairarapa got off to a flying start with opening batsmen Aaron Bidlake and Sam Curtis bringing up 100 runs before the first wicket fell.
Bidlake was typically aggressive in getting through to 67, a knock which was studded with boundaries, including three sixes.
Curtis was more reserved but little less effective in his 40 while others to score well were newcomer Jaco Oosthuizen who made 29 and Chris Jefferies who made 39.
Chasing Wairarapa's 249 Marlborough were always in trouble against the splendid bowling of Greytown medium pacer Hayden Spierling who took six wickets as the visitors fell 107 runs short of their target.
With fellow opening bowler Richard Wylie giving him solid support, Spierling maintained a consistent line and length ands got the ball to do just enough through the air and off the pitch to trouble all the batsmen. His early-season form must have him in the reckoning for higher honours in the not-too-distant future.
Geoff Barnett, who had been demoted from the Central Districts squad, did show some fight for Marlborough in his 37 while Brendon Diamenti, who had earlier taken three wickets, completed a sound all-round effort by making 32
