The Wairarapa Indoor Bowls Centre hosts the Paterson trophy zone match involving six centres in the Wellington region at Makoura College this coming weekend.
This competition is played over six zones throughout New Zealand with 35 centres involved.
The winners of each zone receive a Paterson trophy and go forward to compete for the premier teams award in the country, the Welch trophy, in Auckland from September 5 to 7.
Wairarapa haven't won the Paterson trophy for several years and they will be facing a powerful Wellington side containing some of the country's leading indoor bowlers.
Play will get under way at 9.30am on Saturday and Sunday mornings with the scoring format being four points for a win in the rinks, three points for a win in the pairs and two points for a singles victory.
Confronting Wairarapa at Makoura College will be teams representing Upper Hutt Valley, North Wellington, Hutt Valley, Horowhenua and Bush-Ruahine.
Representing Wairarapa will be Elva Simonsen, Mike King, Deanna Maeclan and Marilyn O'Neale, who will form one rinks team, and Donald Leighton, Kelvin Simonsen, Sarndra Bain and Alex Butler, who will form the other.
The recent representative fixture with North Wellington saw Wairarapa come up against some stiff opposition and the last round of pairs did not have to be played because North Wellington had opened up an unassailable lead. Standout players for the local side were Neville Mikoz and Kevin Towns.
The South Wairarapa triples were played at Greytown with 16 teams competing.
Winners were the South Featherston combination of Kevin Hobbs, Noeline Shirkey and Helen Hobbs while the runners-up were Joan Pederson, Bill Bain and Gill Ericson from Morison's Bush.
The South Featherston singles championship saw the Hobbs family to the fore, Kevin Hobbs winning the men's event and Helen Hobbs the women's.
The Greytown Oddfellows triples were won by Bruce Howe, Marie Harford and Dylan Taylor from Mark Taylor, Deliah Taylor and Gail Miller.
The Masterton Cossie team which competed at the Chartered Clubs's women's nationals in Nelson last week were to the fore with the highlight being the triples title win secured by Elva Simonsen, Marilyn O'Neale and Janice Leighton. Congratulations are certainly in order for them.
