A team of seven will represent Wairarapa at the national division two swimming championships at Hamilton from Wednesday through to Friday.
Their prime objectives will be to make the finals and to record a time good enough to qualify them for the national age group championships next year.
This year's division two champs sees the 14 and 15-year-old age groups combined as one which means the 14-year-olds, of which Wairarapa have four, will be faced with particularly strong competition.
Making up the Wairarapa team are:-
Henry Brown (14yrs) from Carterton: This will be his second year at division two and he has qualified in all sprint strokes. Brown's specialist stroke is breaststroke and his seedings times suggest he should place highly there. He will contest the 50m and 100m events in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle as well as the 200m breaststroke and both the 100m and 200m individual medley.
William Clapperton (13) from Carterton: Clapperton will be making his debut at division two level and will contest the 50m and 100m breaststroke events. The experience gained should be invaluable
Jared Gray (14) from Carterton: Competing at division two for the second year, Gray will swim in the 50m and 100m butterfly, 50m breaststroke and the 100m and 200m individual medley. He is a definite chance to make the finals.
Hamish Hammond (14) from Carterton: Hammond has qualified in a range of events for what will be his first appearance at division two. His seedings time suggest backstroke to be his strongest stroke. His events are the 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke and 100m and 200m individual medley
Leon Nicho (13) from Carterton: Nicho is a first timer at division two level and has a busy programme in front of him. His events are the 50m butterfly, 50m and 100m freestyle and 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke. His seeding times make him a prospect for the finals.
Bridget Maher (16) from Masterton:Maher will be in her second year at division two and has recorded times close to qualifying for the national youth championships. She is particularly effective at middle and long distance freestyle events. Her schedule takes in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle races as well as the 400m individual medley
Matthew Dymond (14) from Masterton: Matthew too shows promise in middle and long distance events. He will be competing at diision two for the first time and his events are the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly, 100m and 200m backstroke, 1500m freestyle and 400m individual medley.
