Wairarapa are looking for a strong all-round performance in their regional superleague netball match with Convent Old Girls at the Genesis Recreation Centre in Masterton tonight.
Coach Kelly Sargent is a hard taskmaster and she was not happy with several aspects of her team's play in their 42-all draw with defending champions PIC last weekend.
While sharing the spoils with a team of PIC's proven record would normally be seen as a good result, Sargent saw it more as a lost opportunity with Wairarapa putting themselves into a winning position close to fulltime and "blowing" it through basic errors.
Sargent is convinced Wairarapa have enough potential within their line-up to make a bold bid for the superleague title they won when the competition was inaugurated two years ago but knows they will need to play consistently well to go anywhere near achieving that objective.
And she also knows they will need to lift their performance to see off a Convent Old Girls side which caused a shock when they beat PIC by the one goal in their opening round encounter after racing away to a double figure lead early in proceedings.
Sargent will be stressing to her side the importance of keeping handling and passing errors to an absolute minimum and of "thinking on their feet" if the trend of the match dictates that the initial game plan needs to be tinkered with.
"Players need to take the responsibility of making decisions for themselves and that's what we are encouraging them to do," she said.
Missing tonight's game through prior commitments are Perri Tatana and Harriet Somerville and the starting seven will have Tania Davidson at goal shoot, Geraldine Carroll at goal attack, Carlene Karaitiana at wing attack, Emma Foote at centre, Katie Wyeth at wing defence, Bridget Minehan at goal defence and Jesse Smith at goalkeep.
