The premier grades in the Wellington secondary schools hockey competitionsthis season have provided a bonanza for Wairarapa-based teams.
Semi-final games will be played in both the boys and girls divisions tonight and Wairarapa sides will contest all but one of them.
In the boys section Wairarapa College and Rathkeale College are scheduled to meet at Clareville at 7.20pm while in the girls section Wairarapa College will play Paraparaumu Girls at Clareville at 6.10pm and St Matthews Collegiate will play Wellington East at the National Hockey Stadium in Wellington, starting at 6.40pm.
Both the Wairarapa College teams finished at the head of the points tables at the end of 14 preliminary round games.
Their boys side registered 12 wins, one draw and one loss to finish on 37pts, six clear of Wellington College. Tawa was third, also on 31pts, and Rathkeale fourth on 20pts. Wairarapa College's goal tally of 66 was 10 better than second highest Wellington College and those two sides also conceded the least number of goals, Wairarapa College 10 and Wellington College 16.
The Wairarapa College girls side were undefeated in preliminary round play, winning 12 of their games and drawing the other two. They scored 57 goals and conceded just eight in finishing on 38pts. Wellington East ended with 32pts, St Matthew's 31 and Paraparaumu Girls 17.
