They had often talked about how nice it would be to marry, said Carol, and when a law change made it possible they decided to do it.
It wasn't until after Saturday's ceremony that the couple were told they had made local history.
Gay men have married in Wairarapa since the law change but Julz and Carol are the first women to do so.
Carol said she had shed a few tears when it started to rain on Saturday morning but, as it turned out, it didn't matter a jot.
Guests, who included their mothers Shar and Tina, were happy to witness their union under umbrellas, to see the couple exchange rings and to partake in later celebrations at the reception, that featured hangi food, held at a club rooms in Belvedere Rd, Carterton.
Carol said marriage celebrant Carol Pilcher had conducted the wedding service "and she was awesome".
The newly married couple work at New World, Carterton, where Carol is a checkout manager and Julz works in the butchery.
They both planned the wedding down to the last detail and were determined not to tie the knot until all expenses had been met from savings, and paid in advance.
Carol's wedding dress was bought from Auckland and the honeymoon, on which they will soon embark, will take in Taupo, Rotorua, Hamilton, Gisborne and Nuhaka.
And when that is over the two will be able to take up a very generous offer from an aunt of Carol's who has given them a 10-day cruise.
Carol said the next item on their agenda was to save and buy their own home and they had also thought about the possibility of adopting children.
