Described as a landmark publication that should be read by all New Zealanders, Tangata Whenua: An Illustrated History is New Zealand's first comprehensive history of Maori, following the footsteps of Maori from Asia and the Pacific to the present day in Aotearoa.
It contains information and images relevant to Wairarapa readers about Hamuera Tamahau Mahupuku, Georgina Beyer, Papawai Marae, Ngati Kahungunu, Rangitane O Wairarapa, Lake Wairarapa, and Kupe's Sail.
The widely respected authors, Atholl Anderson, Aroha Harris and the late Judith Binney, worked with many researchers and historians over seven years to write the book.
"They have created a ground-breaking book to address the gap they saw in the country's written history," said Ripeka Evans, strategic Maori adviser at the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, which helped fund the book.
"The ministry was delighted to be able to support the publication of Tangata Whenua through its New Zealand History Research Trust Fund.
