Wairarapa fatal crash driver charged

A man has been charged with careless driving causing the death of Shirley Mareikura near Mt Bruce in May.
Daniel Lloyd Sawkins, 25, of Masterton, was remanded at large without plea until September 28.
Shirley Theresa Annette Mareikura, 44, known as Kizzy, died at the scene of the single-car crash 700m south of the summit of Mt Bruce, when the Toyota Starlet she was a passenger in hit the left side of the bank, veered across the road and flipped onto its roof.
She was thrown clear of the vehicle as it rolled. People from a passing vehicle peformed CPR on Mareikura until paramedics arrived but she was unable to be revived.
Sawkins was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The crash closed the road for three hours.
