Wairarapa duo Josh Greig and Alex Fafeita grabbed the limelight in throwing events at track and field athletic meets held in the Wellington region over the weekend.
Greig, 17, won his grade in the shot put at a Wellington centre meeting at Newtown Park on Saturday. His throw of 12.78m represented a personal best effort by more than one metre.
Fafeita, 13, also managed a personal best in the discus at a competition held at Paraparaumu on Sunday. His throw of 41.78m bettered his previous pb of 41.72secs set just a week earlier and would rank him as No 1 in his age group in New Zealand for this season.
Both Greig and Fafeita are coached by Wairarapa field event guru John Quinn, whose throwers have been in splendid early-season form with some 15 personal bests having already been registered by them.
On the track it was Vicki Paine who provided the highlight for Wairarapa at the Newtown Park meet. She and fellow Wairarapa runner Ellen Schaef had a titanic struggle over 400m with Paine winning in a pb of 58.94secs, a sharp improvement on her previous best effort of 59.9secs. It was the first time Paine had beaten Schaef over 400m and her time would rank her among the top four in New Zealand for the women's 16yrs grade.
