Wairarapa players Sam Curtis and Seth Rance have been selected for a Central Districts Stags cricket trial match to be played in Napier on the weekend of November 1 and 2.
Their selection comes on the back of impressive performances at training camps held recently under the watchful eye of Stags coach Dermot Reeve.
Curtis and Rance have been chosen in a "select XI" which will take on a line-up which consists largely of incumbent Stags players like Jamie How, Peter Ingram, George Worker, Brad Patton, Matthew Sinclair, Tim Weston, Bevan Griggs, Ewan Thompson, Michael Mason and former Wairarapa rep Doug Bracewell, these days based in the Hawke's Bay.
For Curtis there will be the extra responsibility of captaining the "select XI" and he will be locking horns with former Black Cap How in that department. Curtis has not long returned from a hugely successful stint in English minor league cricket and after playing for Central Districts A in the past is aiming to make the Stags squad for the first time.
Rance did well in a couple of appearances for the Stags towards the end of last season and while Mason, Thompson and Bracewell are practically guaranteed to again be part of the pace attack he is a big chance for the fourth seamer's role.
That Rance is in good form with bat and ball was shown when he spearheaded Greytown to a comfortable 98-run win over Rathkeale College in an Umpiure's Cup club match played at Rathkeale on Saturday.
Greytown batted first and got through to 242-6, thanks in the main to a middle order partnership between Rance (57) and Steve Coleman (52). Paul Lyttle also chimed in with a well-made 28.
Bowling for Rathkeale, Harry Greenwood was economical in taking 1-19 from nine overs, Jacob Smith took 2-33 from 10 overs and Josh Mann 2-34 from six overs.
Rathkeale struggled in reply and were all out for 124. Rance finished with 2-33 from his 10 overs while Ben Hodder took 3-20 and Brian James 2-23.Only Rathkeale batsmen to shine were Harry Clinton-Baker (21) and Phillip Tuoro (20),
Red Star scored a three-wicket win over Wairarapa College in the other Umpire's Cup match played in Wairarapa on Saturday.
Wairarapa College were all out for 123 of which Scott Wilkinson made 24, Tom Adamson 19 and Daniel Ingham 17.Bowling for Red Star Jarred Watt took 3-24, Sean Jarvis 3-34, Nicolai Karaitiana 1-12 and Daniel Stoneley 3-28.
An unbeaten 54 by Chris Wendon steered Red Star to 124-7. Nicolai Karaitina was 27 not out when the target was reached while Jamie Brunbell scored 22 and Daniel Stoneley 16. Leading the Wairarapa College attack with 3-45 was Daniel Ingham and he was supported by Tom Adamson 1-31, Quentin McKenna 2-12 and Oliver Burt 1-15.
