Young Greytown batsman Jackson Kibblewhite literally ran out of partners just one run short of his century during the first day of his team's Wairarapa Cricket Association's Bidwell Cup senior men's inter-club cricket match with Red Star at Greytown on Saturday.
Kibblewhite was left stranded on 99 when the last Greytown wicket was taken through a run-out but he had the satisfaction of knowing that he guided his side to a respectable first innings score of 270. Other good contributions came from Tim Lucas (41) and Paul Lyttle (62).
It was medium pacers Peter Sigvertsen and Bob Beddingham who led the Red Star attack, Sigvertsen finishing with 3-40 and Beddingham with 3-45.
Red Star were 45-2 in their first innings when stumps were drawn.
Meanwhile, Marist Old Boys took out the first round of the open grade competition with a 147-run victory over Rathkeale at Rathkeale College on Saturday.
