Wairarapa crash kills two teens

Two teenagers died on Western Lake Rd yesterday afternoon in a horror smash after their utility vehicle left the road and slammed into a tree.

The two males, 15 and 19, from Greytown, crashed about 200m south of the intersection with the East-West Access Rd, around 2.30pm.

One was found dead at the scene, while the other died while paramedics attended to him.

The vehicle had been travelling south when the crash occurred, said Masterton traffic sergeant Chris Megaw.

"It's a single vehicle involved, lost control, gone off the road, sideways into a tree, on the passenger side."

It appeared the passenger side wheel had entered the road ditch, and the vehicle lost control soon after, crashing on the opposite side.

Passers-by who witnessed the accident called emergency services.

Police opened a paddock to divert vehicles past the scene.

The Life Flight Trust's Westpac rescue helicopter was called in but departed.

Mr Megaw said the weather at the time of the crash was fine.

A police investigation team and emergency services worked into the evening to free the bodies, with the vehicle removed after 7pm.
