Carterton District Council and Masterton District Council have received letters from the minister for the environment congratulating them on their "exceptional resource consent processing performance" following the Resource Management Act (RMA) survey report for 2012/13.
Carterton mayor Ron Mark has suggested this praise should be noted by the Local Government Commission with its upcoming decision on local government reform.
"The begging question has to be: So how does our being swallowed into a Wellington-led super city improve things and if we do become part of a super city does service delivery across the greater Wellington region come up to our level, or does service delivery in the Wairarapa go down to that of the rest?"
The Local Government Commission's recommendation on local governance in Wairarapa is now due on June 5. Carterton District Council Chief Executive Colin Wright was "very pleased" with the praise directed at the council. He said a focus is to make fast decisions regarding resource consent.
