Wairarapa College made Lindisfarne College work hard for their two wicket win in their year 9 and 10 boys Central Districts cricket match played at Lindisfarne.
Batting first, Wairarapa College (winners of the Wairarapa zone) reached 139 runs of which Huib Van Vliet made 40 and Joe Beech 21 not out.
Lindisfarne (Hawke's Bay zone winners) got their innings away to an excellent start and at 80-1 appeared to be cruising to victory. However, wickets then started to fall at regular intervals and at 136-8 the home team should have lost another scalp when they attempted a third run but the return to the 'keeper was astray.
Then with the scores tied the Lindisfarne batsman got a thick edge and skied the ball over the keeper's head for four, thereby giving his side the win. Sean Jarvis was the most impressive bowler for Wairarapa College, finishing with 5-14.
There was better news for the Wairarapa College first XI when they beat Kuranui College in the first round of the Gillette Cup secondary schools competition.
Kuranui College accumulated a useful total of 195 in their 50 overs with opener Aaron Spierling making an impressive 63. He was bowled by Seth Rance who was the star Wairarapa College bowler with figures of 4-28.
Wairarapa College lost two early wickets in their chase for the 196 runs which would see them progress to the next round but then Sam Monaghan (87) and Jason Keen (59 not out) laid the foundations for a five wicket win.
