Decision making has been a bugbear for Wairarapa College in Netball Wairarapa's premier one competition so far this season and they will be looking for better against Carterton Sports Arena at the Genesis Recreation Centre in Masterton tomorrow night.
A narrow 34-38 loss to Kuranui College in their opening match followed by a 40-37 win over Fagan Motors Hot Shots and a 24-24 draw with St Matthew's Collegiate suggest a promising enough start for the Wairarapa College squad.
However, management and players see it differently as all too often turnovers achieved by an outstanding defensive unit comprising Courtney Hamilton, Lily McGilvray, Julie Malcolm and AJ Aporo have not been converted into goals.
In the Kuranui match, for example, statistics showed Wairarapa College turning over opposition ball on no fewer than 38 occasions yet they still lost the game by four goals.
Against St Matthew's too they picked up a huge number of tips and intercepts only to waste the majority of them by handing possession back through a mix of high risk passing and indifferent option taking.
Now coached by Jacqui Southey, Wairarapa College will see tomorrow night's match as a royal opportunity to be more patient in their attacking play and to produce more goals as a result.
At the same time, however, they will also need to be wary of a Carterton Sports Arena side who drew the short straw by having to play arguably the competition's two strongest teams, Celtic and Harcourts in their opening two matches. They lost those games 62-33 and 83-11 respectively but were much more competitive against Kuranui last week, losing that encounter by just seven goals. An ex-Wairarapa College player in Jess Mason has been their standout.
Preceding the Wairarapa College v Carterton Sports Arena fixture tomorrow night will be a battle between two of the other premier one sides, Fagan Motors Hot Shots and Kuranui College
The form book says Kuranui should win but Hot Shots have been making steady improvement and will be no easy beats.
Feature premier one clash at the Genesis Recreation Centre on Friday evening will be that between Gladstone All Blacks and Celtic both of whom have won two of their three games to date, Gladstone All Blacks over Kuranui (47-38) and Fagan Hot Shots (45-33) and Celtic over Carterton Sports Arena (62-33) and Fagan Hot Shots (45-33).
And their losses have both been to Harcourts, Gladstone All Blacks by 59-19 and Celtic by 60-33.
Celtic would have taken confidence from the fact they actually led Harcourts by four goals early in last Thursday's game and that it was only in the second quarter, when they were blitzed 16-1,that they weren't competitive.
In Hope Phillips Celtic have one of the best shooters in the competition and how she copes with the intense pressure sure to be placed on her by experienced Gladstone All Blacks defenders in Kate Jurlina and Celia Donaldson is sure to play a huge part in the end result.
The late game on Friday night has Harcourts up against St Matthew's Collegiate and the three big wins scored by Harcourts already this season suggests the students are in for a hard night at the office.
Harcourts will have the edge all over the court and their experienced shooters Kelly Sargent and Geraldine Carroll-both so impressive against Celtic-should ensure the scoreboard ticks over at a rapid rate.
