After 3 days of competition, athletes from Masterton and Carterton Athletic Clubs, under coach Amanda Goldsmith, very successfully competed at the South Island Colgate Games in Dunedin.
The athletes were very kindly sponsored by webster Drilling of Porirua.
Over 3 days they collected a total of 15 medals ? 4 Gold, 4 Silver and 7 Bronze, battling at times cold blustery conditions and strong competition.
Corrina Paine dominated the 13 year olds Middle Distance, winning gold in the 800m - 2.30.67min and 1500m - 5.06.02min. She also achieved a bronze in the long jump with a 4.61m jump and came 5th in the high jump with a height of 1.41m.
Vicky Paine showed her power in the home straight when she passed her competition to take gold in the 400m in 1.00.14min and then followed this up on Sunday with a silver in the 200m, running home in 27.18sec.
To complete her set of medals she took the Bronze in the long jump, jumping 4.56m.
Her younger sister, Stevie Paine continued her medal collection this season with a gold in the high jump, jumping 1.27m and then achieving silvers in both the 800m and 1500m in closely contended battles against an Alexander girl.
She finished her four chosen events with a 5th in long jump, jumping 3.74m.
Evie Langlands in her first Colgate Games, jumped her way to silver in high jump, jumping 1.37m, equalling the gold medallist but was reduced to the silver on a count back.
She also finished 13th in the long jump and made the semi finals in the 200m.
Jay Langlands battled hard in a very strong 12 year old competition. Competing in the 100m, 200m, long jump and high jump.
He narrowly missed a final place in the 100m final with a photo finish to determine the winners.
Tom Quinn started his Colgate medal collection with a bronze in the 1500m, running it in 5.24.67min. He then went onto finish 5th in both the 800m and 400m finals in very windy and showery conditions.
Amy Sutherland finished 2nd in her heat, in the 80m hurdles and achieved 5th in the finals with a photo finish in a time of 14.47sec.
She also went very well in the high jump, finishing 8th, jumping 1.41m and in the long jump finishing 7th, jumping a 4.49m.
Sam Cates ran strongly in her 200m race, finishing 3rd in her heat and then 4th in the final with a time 27.98sec.
Sam also had very successful 400m races, again finishing 3rd in her heat and 4th in the final. In the long jump she finished 11th, jumping 4.32m.
Kurtis Paine showed he would be a medallist in the future, getting on the podium in all four of his events in the 9 -year old boys, the most successful being the gold pendant in the discus competition in very windy conditions on Sunday.
The Masterton 4 x 100 relay team of Vicky, Corrina, Amy and Sam flew home to take the bronze medal with three of these girls running a year above themselves.
This weekend Vicky Paine travels to Inglewood with the Wellington Inter-Provincial Team and is joined by other Wairarapa athletes ? Ellen Schaef, Josh Greig, Corey Casey, Chris Girling McLean, Cam and Zac Sinclair, Kate McKay and Michael Wilson. We wish them all luck. The junior athletes are also competing at the Medal Day at Hutt Rec this Monday 23.
