A speedster who tailgated and then sped off from an off-duty cop got his just desserts after he was pulled over by officers in Waikato.
The actions by the officer, named as Pete on the Waikato police Facebook page, led to police having a chat and issuing a few ticketsto the driver, who had a long list of driving complaints against his name.
Pete said he was driving home along State Highway 29 after enjoying a day at Mt Maunganui when a silver Mercedes came up behind him and began to tailgate him.
"I was following a vehicle which was doing around 90-95km/h. It's the holidays and I'm definitely not in any hurry. I'm approach [sic] from behind at speed by a silver Merc who's driver decides it's a good idea to tailgate me, knowing very well that I can't go any faster than the vehicle in front of me.
"The car ahead of me turns off so I can increase my speed to 100; however the vehicle behind me still tailgates me."
After the vehicles turn onto SH1 the vehicle gets into the passing lane and takes off, passing what the officer estimates to be up to 12 vehicles at a speed of about 140km/h.
"I can see him in the distance; sure enough tailgating as the passing lane ends."
Pete called 111 and officers eventually clocked the driver at 130km/h and ticketed him for tailgating and speeding.
