North Waikato was due to be without power for two hours this afternoon.
Supplier Wel Networks was asked to turn off the power so Transpower could fix a fault at the Bombay substation.
Wel Networks control systems manager Alan Harrop said at lunchtime that Transpower had just informed the company an emergency shutdown was needed.
He says it was a Transpower problem and Wel Networks was doing as much as it could to minimise the effect on customers.
