Around 70 orderlies at Waikato Hospital have launched strike action.
Unite Union says the workers are locked into a wage freeze but the orderlies have a special case because of the loss of wages relative to other roles in the hospitals.
The orderlies also feel they are suffering a loss of conditions.
Unite Union spokesman Ross Crook says the workers realise their actions come at a difficult time of the year, but they want to highlight that it is not going to be an easy year ahead for them
The strike is under way this morning and will conclude at 12.30pm.
The striking workers are holding a barbecue with music and non-alcoholic drinks and are encouraging the public, other workers and people on low incomes to attend.
