Waikato crash victim wasn't wearing seatbelt

A young man who died in a crash in the Waikato last night was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash on Hall Rd, in the Hamilton suburb of Frankton, about 11.30pm last night, police said.

It appeared a Honda had left the road, hit the kerb and then a small wall, before finally coming to rest after colliding with a large sign post, District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Freda Grace, said.

A 25-year-old man, who was the sole occupant of the car, died as a result.

The young man was not wearing a seatbelt, and it was believed speed may have been a factor in the crash, Ms Grace said.

Enquiries were continuing into what caused the young man to "leave what is a fairly straight piece of road that is well lit and was dry and clear last night", she said.

The Waikato Serious Crash Unit was investigating.

A motorcyclist was also killed in a serious crash in Te Awamutu on Wednesday afternoon.

It had been a terrible two days on Waikato roads, Ms Grace said.

"These are tragedies that have long term effects for the community and the families of all those involved.

"Road safety is no accident, but it will take a change from all of us to ensure that we respect the rules that are designed to keep us safe."
