The waiting list for water delivery on Waiheke Island is getting so long some families need to go without water for days on end.
A hot, dry summer combined with a bump in the number of visitors over recent months is putting a strain on the system.
Locals say it's not the availability of water that's the problem - it's about the capacity that carriers have to actually deliver the water to households.
Waiheke board member Paul Walden says it's left many of the island's vulnerable residents - such as the elderly, disabled and families - in a bad place.
He says in some situations households are being left without water altogether for up to two weeks and then waiting longer for water to actually be delivered.
