KEY POINTS:
WELLINGTON - Waiheke Island composer Helen Bowater has been awarded the composer in residency position at Victoria University in Wellington.
The former Victoria graduate will be taking up the post in June and will stay until July 2009.
New Zealand School of Music Associate Professor Jack Body said Ms Bowater was an outstanding composer who had "one of the most original voices".
During her residency, Ms Bowater will interact with staff, students and many of the Wellington-based performing groups such as the New Zealand String Quartet, Mr Body said.
