A Waiheke Coastguard member's skills were tested when an electrical fire started aboard his 34-foot launch anchored off Great Barrier Island yesterday morning.
Barrier Rescue skipper Doug McLean said the man extinguished the fire and kept his wife and two children out of the toxic cabin until help arrived to tow the boat to shore.
