Wairarapa College retained the McBride-Peterson Cup after drawing their rain-affected cricket match with Rathkeale College at the weekend.
Played as part of the Bidwell Cup series, the game was scheduled to be held at Wairarapa College over Saturday and Sunday but the wet weather on Sunday ruled out any chance of play.
Day one had seen Rathkeale win the toss and invite Wairarapa College to bat on a seaming wicket always likely to provide a variable bounce.
While most of their batsmen had lengthy stays at the wicket, runs were hard to come by and Wairarapa College were finally out for just 108 from 59 overs.
Richard Woolgar (13) and Tim Griffith (24) had the best partnership of the innings, taking the score from 18-2 to 69 before a third wicket was lost.
All of Rathkeale's bowlers were effective in the helpful conditions. Harvey Mason was the most successful of them in taking 3-20 off his 13 overs. But perhaps the pick of them was Josh Mann, who took 2-30 off 13 overs. George Deans chimed in with 2-10 from eight overs.
At 3-38 the Rathkeale first innings got away to a rocky start but was righted by a solid partnership between Josh Mann (34) and Ben Foster (29). They put on 65 runs between them but once they were gone - both to brilliant catches - there was little further resistance and the innings ended at 137, giving Rathkeale a lead of 29.
Andrew Williams was the most impressive of the Wairarapa College bowlers, taking 5-42 off 12 overs, while left arm orthodox spinner Martin Reisima claimed 4-24 from 10 overs.
The last five overs of the first day's play saw Rathkeale's Mann remove both Wairarapa College openers, Nick Griffith and Mark Cummings, cheaply to have them reeling at 8-2 when stumps were drawn.
Wairarapa College and Rathkeale College will meet again in a joint Umpires Cup-Gillette Cup match at Rathkeale on March 19.
