More than 50 senior pupils donated their blood during the yearly New Zealand Blood Service visit to Wairarapa College last week.
Youth Health Provider Julie Booth said Wairarapa College had held a blood donation day each year for the past decade and the visit "is a wonderful opportunity for the students to give back to the community that has supported them in lots of areas".
There were several new donors this year and many returning for a second time, Mrs Booth said, and she hoped those pupils would continue as donors after graduating from college. "I think the motivation comes from doing something for the community and helping other people."
Year 13 donor Georgia McDonald said it was her second time giving blood and she had been inspired to keep giving blood as it might save a life.
Fellow Year 12 blood donors Zac Rowe and Lily Nicholls gave blood for the first time this year and it had gone smoothly, each saying being a blood donor "was a good thing to do and it was important to help out".
