Wairarapa College battled icy conditions in beating Palmerston North Boys High second XV 12-5 in their Manawatu secondary schoolboys rugby competition match played in Palmerston North on Saturday.
Torrential rain and a stiff wind fully tested the accuracy of both sides and there was doubt as to whether Wairarapa College had done enough when they led 12-0 at the break after having the elements in their favour.
Tries were scored by Hui van Vliet and Thomas Kainuku with one being converted by Robbie Anderson.
That PNBHS were able to score just the one try in the second half spoke volumes for the stoutness of the Wairarapa College defence. They also benefited from an improved forward effort which saw them earning more than their share of valuable possession.
Their win puts Wairarapa College into second place on the premier one competition table behind Feilding High with three games remaining to complete the round robin.
There was good news too for the Wairarapa College under-15s on Saturday. They bounced back from their Manawatu competition defeat of the previous weekend to beat a PNBHS side 35-0.
