KEY POINTS:
Volkswagen has unveiled a road-going concept car called the GT24.
Based on the Scirocco race car, the GT24 is powered by a race-tuned 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI engine developing around 300bhp at 6,500rpm.
The engine is coupled with a six-speed DSG gearbox which channels drive to the cars front wheels.
Many of the concept components have been carried over from the road car however, the Scirocco GT24's dimensions vary significantly, with a 227 mm gain in length and 61 mm gain in width to accommodate a wider track.
Inside, the race-focused interior of the GT24 includes a pair of lightweight Recaro bucket seats with five-point racing harnesses, a steering wheel and electronic display and fire extinguisher.
Set into a carbon panel are simple toggle switches which control the ABS settings and electrical and ventilation systems.
The road-going Scirocco, on which the GT24 concept is based, goes on sale soon.
It will develop around 200bhp and comes with a choice of six-speed manual and DSG (direct sequential) gearboxes.
The stock version of Volkswagen's Scirocco will be released in New Zealand in March 2009.
