Volkswagen has released the first offical photo of its new convertible Beetle. The car is expected to go on sale in New Zealand next year, powered by the same 2-litre engine as the present hardtop.
The open three-layer soft-top rests on the area of the imaginary C pillar, a design deliberately reminiscent of the original Beetle convertible.
But the top lies much lower, thanks to an elaborate folding system.
There are two release mechanisms for the foldaway top - one mechanical, the other opening and closing at the press of a button, taking only 13 seconds each way.
The new Beetle comes with a rollover protection hoop located behind the rear seat back. There is expected to be a range of new colours for the car.
