Carterton District Council will vote today whether to proceed with the next step to enforce a liquor ban in Carterton's central business district.
In May Wairarapa police presented the council with a report outlining problems in the CBD involving intoxication, including damage to commercial property and defecating in shop doorways.
A liquor prohibition requires a change to the council's bylaw, which only prohibits liquor consumption in Carrington Park.
As well as the CBD, the ban would include Millennium Park, Memorial Square and the Town Clock reserve. A liquor ban allows police to arrest drinkers on the spot.
If the council passes the proposal, it would proceed to public notification on October 1, with submissions invited.
