Centre-right voters have been warned they will regret voting Labour to try to keep the Greens out of government.
The National Party conference opened on Saturday with members being urged not to be discouraged by the party's low rating in the polls.
Some analysts believe National is bleeding support as sympathisers weigh up giving their vote to Labour in order to allow Prime Minister Helen Clark to form a government without the Greens' backing.
But National Party leader Bill English said his personal experience on the campaign trail made him wonder "who the pollsters are talking to".
His deputy, Roger Sowry, said that "playing with your party vote will not solve anything. A vote for Labour is a vote for Labour-Green policies".
