In 2002, Volvo Car Group brought SUV safety to a new dimension by introducing the Volvo XC90.
And more than a decade later the US Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) still ranks the XC90 as one of the safest cars on the market, awarding it a 2014 Top Safety Pick+.
"The IIHS award emphasises the sustainability of our safety leadership," says Thomas Broberg, senior safety adviser at Volvo.
"And the upcoming all-new XC90, which arrives in 2014, will feature new innovative safety features that bring us another leap towards our aim that by 2020 no one should be injured or killed in a new Volvo. Our long-term vision is that cars should not crash."
The XC90 Top Safety Pick+ results include a good performance in the small overlap front test, which replicates what happens when the front corner of a vehicle strikes another vehicle or an object, such as a tree or a pole - a severe crash situation.
