The volcanic ash cloud is continuing to disrupt flights.
Qantas has cancelled flights to and from Queenstown until further notice, and won't be flying to and from Wellington until 2pm today.
Jetstar has also grounded all flights to and from Queenstown, Christchurch, and Wellington until midday.
Air New Zealand flights are running as scheduled.
Civil Aviation meteorological manager Peter Lechner says the ash cloud has moved up over the South Island and lies just north of Wellington at the moment.
"It's still at 20,000 feet which allows aircraft to operate underneath the ash cloud and we expect it to slowly move off the country by the weekend."
Peter Lechner says the ash cloud is slowly moving away.
