A young woman is in hospital after a violent home invasion in the Christchurch suburb of Waltham early this morning.
Inspector Bob Palmer of the police southern communications centre said four out of five people believed to have been responsible for the aggravated burglary at 4am were now in police custody, with one outstanding.
An "alert member of the public" was instrumental in their capture, he said.
A timely call to police coupled with quick patrol action, including a short foot chase by police, resulted in a rapid resolution to the incident, he said.
A young woman, one of three victims at home during the attack, was injured and is being treated in hospital.
The scene is under guard and inquiries are continuing.
