Teresa Gunn, victim of a violent stabbing spree in Tauranga, had previously been found guilty of assaulting one of her children, which resulted in the child being removed from her care.
The father of the 27-year-old woman, who was found dead in her home on Sunday night, has spoken about violence in his daughter's home.
David Gunn was a prosecution witness earlier this year when his daughter was convicted of assaulting her 8-year-old son.
He said he gave evidence because he was concerned about the environment his grandson was living in. The boy was removed from Ms Gunn's custody and now lives with his father in Northland.
Mr Gunn also believed his daughter was subjected to a lot of violence in her home.
She had recently taken out a protection order against a former partner.
Her current partner, George Andrew Grabner, 39, also died from stab wounds on Sunday.
His grieving family had not met Ms Gunn and had only learned about their son's relationship with her two weeks ago.
Mike Stirling, who employed Mr Grabner at his plastering business and had known him for 13 years, said he was "a neat guy" who would be sadly missed.
Meanwhile, police say more serious charges will be laid against the father of two of Ms Gunn's children, Jason August Reihana.
Reihana, 33, has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm following the incident on Sunday.
He also suffered injuries and his court appearances have been held at his bedside in Tauranga Hospital.
Although in a serious condition in hospital he has technically been remanded in custody and is under police guard.
